What is Meditation? In my experience, meditation is awareness. Anything that you focus your awareness on can become your meditation practice; eating, walking, breathing, listening or just being. A common misconception about meditation is that you cannot have thoughts. The reality is that when we meditate, thoughts naturally do arise, yet is it what we do with them that makes all the difference. Learning to watch our thoughts, halts the cycle of suffering (pain, stress, anxiety, anger, restlessness) and improves the brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections. Just like trying anything new, learning to meditate can be challenging at first. Consider practicing in shorter increments; 5 minutes a day is more beneficial than 1 hour once a week. Be patient with the process. Seeking out meditation groups will also help to support your practice. Overall, the practice of meditation improves our ability to focus, promotes a sense of contentment, and reinforces the mind-body connection. With continued practice we learn to recognize the answers that lie within ourselves as a source of inner truth as opposed to the habits of the mind which often run our lives. Meditation helps to create space within so that we can hold space for others. Learn to meditate anywhere anytime. For a simple, contemporary approach to meditation, visit: TERGAR LISTEN |

Give the Gift of StillnessJanuary 1, 2011 - this year I set out to give the gift of stillness by making meditation wraps for the ones I love. It was a concept that was introduced by an article in Yoga Journal in 2010, however my own experience with the project has been a blessing that keeps on giving. As I weave together positive affirmations, mantras and good intentions, my mind become filled with that which I aim to extend unto others. The movement of crochet itself is a beautiful meditation, coupled with right thought, it becomes a boundless blessing. Consider giving the gift of stillness as an extension of love, joy, peace and positivity - no occasion necessary. |
